Ophthalmology Practice Boosts IOL Conversions by 76% with AI Patient Education

    Ophthalmology practices are getting strategic with AI patient engagement and it’s paying off.

    Comprehensive EyeCare Partners (CompEye) is a physician-led organization with a mission to empower eye care practices with tools and support for clinical and operational excellence.  CompEye members adopted Clearwave and Vital Interaction to tackle challenges across the patient journey, leveraging AI and self-service solutions to make it happen. Reviewing the partnership, Regional VP at CompEye, Chad Jackson, shares, “It’s been great to see the improvements in engagement across the patient journey. Combined with the cost and efficiency savings we’ve seen using these tools, the impact has been tremendous.”

It’s not just about a single visit. It’s about creating a consistent and efficient experience to drive better outcomes and happier patients.”

    Challenge: Personalizing the Patient Experiences Without Adding Staff

    CompEye set out to modernize their approach to patient care by integrating meaningful automation across the patient journey. With a growing network of practices, the organization faced common pain points: high no-show rates, low time-of-service collections and staff overwhelmed by manual workflows. Jackson shares one of the biggest challenges practices face in the healthcare industry. 

    CompEye needed a solution that would elevate the patient experience while simultaneously improving efficiency and revenue without burdening their teams. 

    Solution: Clearwave + Vital Interaction Provide a Connected Experience

    To solve these challenges, CompEye deployed Clearwave Eligibility, Scheduling and Registration and Vital Interaction’s Communication and Reactivation Tools. This end-to-end integration allowed practice members to automate patient communications, simplify intake and drive meaningful patient engagement. 

    Jackson discusses the impact on staffing across practices by reducing workloads and no-show rates. Combining AI-powered patient education with Clearwave’s online booking links has helped the practice reduce attrition rates.

    The practice sees 48% of bookings made after receiving a referral reactivation, 32% after a no-show reactivation and 29% after an annual reactivation message. Jackson notes, “We’ve had a lot of success with provider-recorded calls using Vital Interaction’s unique AI technology. It has been a game changer for our practice as it relates to no-shows, patient education and premium service conversions.” 

    How Vital and Clearwave Help to Drive Up IOL Conversions

    Texan Eye has also launched a patient education campaign, which led to an increase in IOL conversion rates, from 29% to 51%, a 76% boost. Jackson comments, “Our premium IOL conversion rate has increased dramatically. The major driver behind that growth is the AI-powered educational videos. It’s a one-and-done action from our providers that continues to pay off through automation and AI.” 

    Integrating online scheduling links into this approach enables the practice to capitalize on patient interest, driving a $450k increase in new cashflow. Jackson shares how it works, “We’re sending educational videos in pre-appointment communications to help patients learn about premium lenses, laser cataract surgery and other treatments available.” 

    Going on he notes, “We educate those patients before they come in, and now they’re ready to discuss the right options with their provider. It’s made our doctors more efficient and our patients more engaged.” 

    Patient-led registration has helped CompEye practices boost efficiency, satisfaction and profits. Jackson says, “We’ve reduced the number of people that we need at our front desk significantly. We’re much more efficient as a clinic than we were previously.” 

    To kick-off intake, Texan Eye offers pre-registration and clinical intake, seeing high patient adoption rates of 64%. At the office, CompEye members see average check-in times of 2-3 minutes with 96% of patients adopting self-registration.  

    Jackson says, “There’s a modernized process that takes patients through their registration, providing kiosk, QR code or tablet options. At the same time, our front desk team has been able to change roles. Instead of focusing on data entry, they’re now a concierge, it’s a much warmer interaction than we had before.” 

    Through pre-visit communications, provider-recorded AI videos, and real-time scheduling, CompEye created a smoother, smarter patient experience—from referral to recall.

    The results speak volumes. With AI-powered education and self-service scheduling and registration, CompEye saw:  

    • 154% Increase in Collections at Time-Of-Service  
    • 76% Increase in Premium IOL Conversion Rate
